From a young age, Matteoli was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Matteoli's talent was evident from an early age, and he began performing in public at the age of six. He quickly gained a reputation as a prodigy and was invited to perform at various concerts and events. At the age of ten, he won his first piano competition, and this marked the beginning of his career as a professional musician. Matteoli continued to study music throughout his teenage years and attended the Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Cherubini in Florence. He studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers in Italy, including Maria Tipo and Aldo Ciccolini. During this time, he also began to perform extensively throughout Italy and Europe, gaining a reputation as one of the most talented young pianists of his generation. In 1972, Matteoli won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a major turning point in his career, as it brought him international recognition and opened up new opportunities for him to perform around the world.
