His father, Giuseppe Maria Cervetto, was a violinist and composer, and his mother, Maria Maddalena Basevi, was a singer. Giacobbe was the youngest of their six children, and he showed an early interest in music. At the age of nine, Giacobbe began studying the cello with his father. He quickly became proficient on the instrument and began performing in public at a young age. In 1697, when he was just fifteen years old, he was appointed as a cellist in the orchestra of the Teatro Regio Ducal in Milan. This was a prestigious position, and it gave him the opportunity to perform with some of the leading musicians of the day. In 1700, Giacobbe left Milan and traveled to London, where he joined the orchestra of the King's Theatre. He quickly established himself as one of the leading cellists in London, and he became known for his virtuosic playing and his ability to improvise. He also began composing music, and his works were well-received by audiences and critics alike. In 1706, Giacobbe left London and traveled to Paris, where he joined the orchestra of the Académie Royale de Musique. He remained in Paris for several years, and during this time he composed some of his most important works. These included his six cello sonatas, which are considered to be among the finest examples of Baroque cello music. In 1710, Giacobbe returned to London, where he continued to perform and compose music. He became a favorite of the royal court, and he was appointed as a cellist in the orchestra of King George I. He also performed in concerts throughout England, and he became known for his ability to improvise on the cello. Giacobbe's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was considered to be one of the leading composers of his day. His works were characterized by their virtuosity and their expressive melodies. He was particularly skilled at writing for the cello, and his music for the instrument is still performed and studied today. In addition to his cello music, Giacobbe also composed a number of vocal works, including operas and cantatas. These works were also well-received, and they demonstrated his skill as a composer of vocal music. Despite his success as a composer and performer, Giacobbe's personal life was marked by tragedy. He was married twice, and both of his wives died young. He also lost several of his children at a young age. These personal losses may have contributed to his decision to retire from performing in 1738, when he was fifty-six years old. After his retirement, Giacobbe continued to compose music, but he did not publish any new works. He died in London in 1783, at the age of one hundred and one. His legacy as a composer and cellist lives on, however, and his music continues to be performed and studied by musicians and music lovers around the world.More....
