Born in Montreal, Canada, in 1958, Magnan showed an early interest in music and began playing the clarinet at the age of nine. He was a natural talent and quickly progressed, winning his first competition at the age of 12. Magnan continued to hone his skills and studied at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, where he received his diploma in clarinet performance. He then went on to study with renowned clarinetists such as Yona Ettlinger, Robert Marcellus, and Larry Combs. In 1981, Magnan joined the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as principal clarinetist, a position he held for 25 years. During his time with the orchestra, he performed in numerous concerts and recordings, including the complete works of Mozart and Beethoven. Magnan's talent and dedication to his craft did not go unnoticed, and he received several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1983, he won the prestigious Prix d'Europe, which allowed him to study in Europe for a year. He also won the CBC Radio Competition in 1984 and the International Clarinet Competition in Munich in 1985. In addition to his work with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Magnan has performed as a soloist with many other orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec. He has also performed in chamber music ensembles, including the Montreal Wind Quintet and the Magnan-Pomerleau Duo. One of Magnan's most notable performances was his interpretation of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major, which he performed with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 1999. The performance was recorded and released on CD, receiving critical acclaim and cementing Magnan's reputation as one of the world's leading clarinetists. Magnan has also been a dedicated teacher, sharing his knowledge and expertise with students at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and the Université de Montréal. He has also given masterclasses and workshops around the world, including in Japan, China, and Europe. In 2006, Magnan retired from his position as principal clarinetist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, but he continues to perform and teach. He has recorded several CDs, including a recording of Brahms' Clarinet Quintet with the Fine Arts Quartet.
