Founded in 1969 by conductor and arranger, Johnny Green, the orchestra has become known for its unique sound and exceptional performances. Johnny Green was a well-known composer and arranger in Hollywood, having worked on numerous films and television shows. He had a vision to create an orchestra that would bring together the best musicians in the Southwest region of the United States. With the help of his wife, Bonnie, he began recruiting musicians and organizing rehearsals. The orchestra's first performance was in 1970 at the Arizona State Fair. The audience was impressed with the orchestra's sound and the musicians' skill. From there, the Southwest Studio Orchestra began to gain popularity and was soon performing at major events and venues throughout the Southwest. One of the main members of the orchestra was concertmaster, Steven Moeckel. Moeckel was a talented violinist who had studied at the Juilliard School in New York City. He joined the Southwest Studio Orchestra in 1998 and quickly became an integral part of the ensemble. Moeckel's skill and passion for music helped to elevate the orchestra's performances to new heights. Over the years, the Southwest Studio Orchestra has performed with many notable musicians and artists. In 1987, the orchestra performed with legendary jazz pianist, Dave Brubeck, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The concert was a huge success and helped to solidify the orchestra's reputation as a top-notch ensemble. In 1995, the Southwest Studio Orchestra performed at the opening ceremony of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team. The orchestra played the national anthem and several other patriotic songs, which helped to set the tone for the game and the team's inaugural season. In addition to its live performances, the Southwest Studio Orchestra has also recorded several albums. One of its most popular albums is "The Music of Johnny Green," which features some of Green's most famous compositions and arrangements. The album was released in 2002 and received critical acclaim. Throughout its history, the Southwest Studio Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades. In 1999, the orchestra was awarded the Governor's Arts Award for its contributions to the arts in Arizona. In 2019, the Southwest Studio Orchestra celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special concert at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The concert featured some of the orchestra's most popular pieces and was attended by many of the orchestra's fans and supporters.
