Born on August 21, 1941, in Moscow, Grindenko showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the violin and studied at the Moscow Conservatory, where he graduated with honors in 1964. After completing his studies, Grindenko joined the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, where he played as a violinist for several years. However, his passion for early music led him to form the Moscow Conservatory Chamber Orchestra in 1972, which specialized in the performance of Baroque and Renaissance music. Grindenko served as the orchestra's conductor and artistic director, and under his leadership, the ensemble gained international recognition for its innovative and historically informed performances. Throughout his career, Grindenko was a champion of early music and worked tirelessly to promote the study and performance of music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
