The National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCoS) is a classical music ensemble that has been delighting audiences with its beautiful choral performances for over 25 years. Founded in 1996, the choir has grown to become one of the most respected and renowned youth choirs in the world. The idea for the National Youth Choir of Scotland was first conceived by Christopher Bell, a Scottish conductor and choral director. Bell had previously worked with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and was inspired to create a similar organization in Scotland. With the support of the Scottish Arts Council, Bell founded the NYCoS in 1996. From the beginning, the NYCoS was committed to providing young people in Scotland with the opportunity to develop their musical talents and perform at the highest level. The choir is open to singers aged 16-25 and is made up of around 150 members from all over Scotland. Over the years, the NYCoS has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and Carnegie Hall in New York. The choir has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in classical music, including Sir James MacMillan, Sir Karl Jenkins, and John Rutter. One of the highlights of the NYCoS's career was their performance at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The choir performed a specially commissioned piece by composer Craig Armstrong, which was broadcast to millions of people around the world. The NYCoS has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2006, the choir won the prestigious BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition, beating off competition from some of the best choirs in the UK. The choir has also won several awards at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, including the Choir of the World title in 2012. In addition to their performances, the NYCoS is also committed to providing music education and outreach programs to young people across Scotland. The choir runs a number of initiatives, including the NYCoS Training Choirs, which provide young singers with the opportunity to develop their skills and perform in a choir setting. The NYCoS is also committed to promoting Scottish music and culture. The choir has performed a number of traditional Scottish songs and has commissioned new works from Scottish composers. In 2014, the choir released an album of Scottish folk songs, which was critically acclaimed and helped to raise the profile of Scottish music around the world. In recent years, the NYCoS has continued to go from strength to strength. The choir has performed at a number of high-profile events, including the opening ceremony of the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow. The choir has also continued to work with some of the biggest names in classical music, including Sir James MacMillan and Sir Karl Jenkins. Looking to the future, the NYCoS is committed to continuing its mission of providing young people in Scotland with the opportunity to develop their musical talents and perform at the highest level. With its commitment to excellence and its passion for music, the National Youth Choir of Scotland is sure to continue to delight audiences around the world for many years to come.
