Baril grew up in a musical family, and her parents were both amateur musicians. Her father played the violin, and her mother played the piano. Baril started playing the piano at the age of four, and by the time she was six, she was already performing in public. Baril received her early musical training at the École Vincent-d'Indy in Montreal, where she studied with Yvonne Hubert. She later went on to study at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, where she earned a diploma in piano performance. Baril continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied with Adele Marcus and earned a Master of Music degree. Baril's career as a concert pianist began in the early 1980s, and she quickly established herself as one of Canada's leading classical pianists. She has performed extensively throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia, and has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Baril has also been a frequent guest artist at many of the world's leading music festivals, including the Festival de Lanaudière, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, the Festival de Musique de Saint-Barthélemy, and the Festival de Musique de Menton. She has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Joshua Bell, and soprano Renée Fleming. Baril's repertoire is extensive and includes works by many of the world's greatest composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Mozart, and Schumann. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the works of French composers, including Debussy, Ravel, and Fauré. In addition to her career as a concert pianist, Baril is also a highly respected music educator. She has taught at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Montreal. She has also given masterclasses and workshops at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire de Paris. Baril has received many awards and honors throughout her career. In 1980, she won the prestigious Prix d'Europe, which is awarded annually to the best young musician in Canada. She has also been awarded the Order of Canada, one of Canada's highest honors, for her contributions to Canadian music. In 2015, she was awarded the Prix Opus for "Personality of the Year" by the Conseil québécois de la musique. Baril has also recorded extensively throughout her career.
