Hansen began his formal music education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly progressed and was soon performing in public. At the age of 12, he won his first piano competition, which was held in Oslo. This victory marked the beginning of a long and successful career in music. In 1966, Hansen moved to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City. He studied under the renowned pianist and teacher, Rosina Lhévinne. During his time at Juilliard, Hansen won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1973. After graduating from Juilliard, Hansen embarked on a career as a concert pianist. He performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, playing with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. One of Hansen's most memorable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1975. He played a program of works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt, which received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The New York Times described his playing as "virtuosic and deeply expressive." Hansen also made several recordings throughout his career, including a highly acclaimed recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra.
