Conspirare is a Grammy-nominated choral ensemble based in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1991 by Craig Hella Johnson, the group has become known for its innovative programming and powerful performances. Johnson, a native of Minnesota, began his musical career as a pianist and conductor. He studied at St. Olaf College and the Juilliard School before moving to Texas to pursue a career in choral music. In 1991, he founded Conspirare as a professional chamber choir, with the goal of creating a new kind of choral experience. From the beginning, Conspirare was known for its eclectic programming, which blended classical choral music with contemporary works and other genres. Johnson's vision was to create a "community of voices" that could connect with audiences on a deep emotional level. Over the years, Conspirare has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Edinburgh Festival. The group has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, from classical musicians like Yo-Yo Ma and Dawn Upshaw to pop stars like Sting and Elvis Costello. One of Conspirare's most notable performances was its 2009 concert at the Texas State Capitol, which drew a crowd of over 10,000 people. The concert, titled "Considering Matthew Shepard," was a tribute to the young gay man who was brutally murdered in Wyoming in 1998. The piece, composed by Johnson, blended choral music with spoken word and other elements to create a powerful and moving tribute to Shepard's life and legacy. "Considering Matthew Shepard" went on to become one of Conspirare's most acclaimed works, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Surround Sound Album in 2017. The group has also been nominated for several other Grammy Awards over the years, including Best Choral Performance and Best Classical Crossover Album. In addition to its performances, Conspirare is also known for its educational and outreach programs. The group regularly works with schools and community organizations to promote choral music and inspire the next generation of musicians.
