Kyr started playing the piano at a young age and showed a keen interest in music composition. Kyr received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Kansas in 1975, where he studied composition with James Barnes and Thomas McKinley. He then went on to pursue his Master of Music degree from the University of Colorado, where he studied with Cecil Effinger. The oratorio has been performed by numerous ensembles around the world and has received critical acclaim for its innovative approach to the traditional Passion story. Another significant work by Kyr is his opera, "The Waking Sun," which premiered in 2000. The opera tells the story of a young woman who is forced to confront her past and come to terms with her identity. The piece features a diverse cast of characters and incorporates elements of Japanese Noh theater and Balinese gamelan music. "The Waking Sun" has been performed by several opera companies in the United States and has been praised for its originality and emotional depth. Kyr has also composed several works for chamber ensembles, including his string quartet, "Songs of the Soul Beams," which was commissioned by the Kronos Quartet in 1995. The piece is based on the poetry of Rumi and incorporates elements of Middle Eastern music. In addition to his work as a composer, Kyr is also a respected music educator.
