Percy Faith & His Orchestra was a Canadian-American ensemble that gained popularity in the mid-20th century for their unique blend of classical music and popular music. The orchestra was founded by Percy Faith, a composer, arranger, and conductor, in 1940. Percy Faith was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1908. He began his music career as a pianist and arranger for various radio stations in Canada. In 1940, he moved to the United States and started working for NBC as a conductor and arranger. It was during this time that he formed his own orchestra, which he led for over 20 years. The main members of Percy Faith & His Orchestra included a variety of talented musicians, including brass players, woodwind players, percussionists, and string players. Some of the most notable members of the orchestra included Al Caiola, a guitarist who played on many of the orchestra's recordings, and Milt Hinton, a bassist who played with the orchestra for over a decade. One of the highlights of Percy Faith & His Orchestra's career was their performance at the 1952 Academy Awards ceremony. The orchestra performed the song "Wonder Why" from the film "Rich, Young and Pretty," which was nominated for Best Original Song. Although the song did not win the award, the orchestra's performance was well-received and helped to increase their popularity. Another notable performance by the orchestra was their rendition of the song "Theme from A Summer Place," which was released in 1959. The song became a huge hit, reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and staying there for nine weeks. The song also won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1960. Throughout their career, Percy Faith & His Orchestra released numerous albums and singles, many of which were successful on the charts. Some of their other notable recordings include "Delicado," "The Song from Moulin Rouge," and "Till." In addition to their commercial success, Percy Faith & His Orchestra also received critical acclaim for their music. The orchestra won several Grammy Awards throughout their career, including Best Performance by an Orchestra in 1960 and 1961, and Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1962. Percy Faith retired from the music industry in the 1970s and passed away in 1976. However, his legacy lives on through his music and the influence he had on the genre of easy listening music. Percy Faith & His Orchestra's unique blend of classical and popular music continues to be appreciated by music lovers around the world.
