The French National Radio Chorus, also known as the Chœur de Radio France, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Paris, France. The choir was founded in 1944 by the French public radio broadcaster, Radiodiffusion Française, which later became Radio France. Since its inception, the choir has been an integral part of the French cultural scene, performing a wide range of choral works from the Renaissance to contemporary music. The French National Radio Chorus has a rich history of musical excellence and has collaborated with some of the most prominent conductors and composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The choir has also been recognized for its outstanding performances and has received numerous awards and accolades. The early years of the French National Radio Chorus were marked by the leadership of its first conductor, Marcel Couraud. Under his direction, the choir quickly gained a reputation for its high standards of musicianship and versatility. Couraud was succeeded by Georges Tzipine, who continued to build on the choir's success and expanded its repertoire to include works by contemporary composers such as Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez. In the 1960s, the French National Radio Chorus began to attract international attention, thanks in part to its collaborations with the legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan. The choir performed with Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in a series of concerts and recordings, including a critically acclaimed performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the French National Radio Chorus continued to expand its repertoire and collaborate with leading conductors and composers. The choir worked with Pierre Boulez on several occasions, including a performance of his Repons at the Pompidou Center in Paris. The choir also performed with Leonard Bernstein and the Orchestre National de France in a memorable performance of Mahler's Eighth Symphony. In the 1990s, the French National Radio Chorus underwent a period of transition, with the appointment of a new conductor, John Nelson. Nelson brought a fresh perspective to the choir and expanded its repertoire to include works by American composers such as Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland. Under his leadership, the choir also embarked on several international tours, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. In recent years, the French National Radio Chorus has continued to thrive under the direction of its current conductor, Sofi Jeannin. Jeannin, who was appointed in 2015, is the first woman to lead the choir. She has brought a new energy and vision to the ensemble, expanding its outreach and engagement with audiences through innovative programming and collaborations with other artists. One of the highlights of the French National Radio Chorus's recent performances was its participation in the 2018 Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The choir performed in a concert featuring the music of French composer Claude Debussy, alongside the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conductor Sakari Oramo. The performance was widely praised for its sensitivity and nuance, and showcased the choir's continued excellence in the performance of French choral music. The French National Radio Chorus has also been recognized for its outstanding recordings, receiving numerous awards and accolades over the years.
