Born on January 20, 1928, in Prague, Czechoslovakia, Skampa grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, which meant that music was an integral part of his life from an early age. Skampa began his musical training at the Prague Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of Ladislav Cerny. He later continued his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he was taught by Vaclav Neumann. Skampa's talent as a violist was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1950, Skampa joined the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, where he played as a violist for over 20 years. During his time with the orchestra, Skampa performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors of his time, including Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Rafael Kubelik. In addition to his work with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, Skampa was also a member of the Smetana Quartet, one of the most celebrated string quartets of the 20th century. Skampa joined the quartet in 1956, and he remained a member until the group disbanded in 1989. During his time with the Smetana Quartet, Skampa performed in countless concerts and made numerous recordings, many of which are still considered to be some of the finest examples of chamber music. Skampa's talent as a violist was widely recognized, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1962, he was awarded the State Prize of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic for his contributions to music. He was also awarded the Medal of Merit by the Czech Republic in 1998, and he was made an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2001. Skampa's contributions to the world of music were not limited to his performances as a violist. He was also a respected teacher, and he taught at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague for over 30 years. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as musicians, and Skampa's influence on the world of music can still be felt today. Milan Skampa passed away on August 14, 2018, at the age of 90.
