Jacques Houtmann was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 12, 1948, in Brussels, Belgium. He was the youngest of three children and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, and they both encouraged Jacques to pursue his interest in music from a young age. Jacques began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument and progressed rapidly. By the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public and had won several local competitions. In 1966, Jacques enrolled at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he studied piano under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher Eduardo del Pueyo. He also studied chamber music and composition, and it was during this time that he discovered his love for the cello. After completing his studies at the conservatory, Jacques began his professional career as a pianist and cellist. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, and he was soon in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. One of the highlights of Jacques' early career was his performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra in 1972. The performance was a huge success, and Jacques received rave reviews for his virtuosic playing and musical interpretation. Over the next few years, Jacques continued to perform as a soloist and chamber musician, and he also began to teach at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He quickly gained a reputation as an excellent teacher, and many of his students went on to have successful careers in music. In 1980, Jacques was invited to perform at the prestigious Edinburgh International Festival. He performed a program of works by Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms, and his performance was hailed as one of the highlights of the festival. In 1982, Jacques was awarded the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Music Competition Prize for Chamber Music. The prize was a major achievement for Jacques, and it helped to further establish his reputation as one of the leading classical musicians of his generation. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Jacques continued to perform and teach, and he also began to record his music. He recorded several albums of solo piano and cello music, as well as chamber music with other musicians. One of the highlights of Jacques' recording career was his recording of Beethoven's complete piano sonatas. The recording was released in 1997 and received widespread critical acclaim. It was hailed as one of the definitive recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas, and it helped to cement Jacques' reputation as a leading interpreter of Beethoven's music. In 2000, Jacques retired from performing and teaching due to health reasons. However, he continued to be active in the music world, serving as a judge for several international music competitions and mentoring young musicians. Jacques Houtmann passed away on January 15, 2015, at the age of 66. He was remembered as a gifted musician, a dedicated teacher, and a kind and generous person who had a profound impact on the world of classical music. His legacy lives on through his recordings, his students, and the countless musicians who were inspired by his music and his example.
