Edith Canat de Chizy is a French composer who was born on February 17, 1950, in Lyon, France. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her father being a composer and her mother a pianist. Her parents encouraged her to pursue music, and she began studying piano and music theory at a young age. Canat de Chizy went on to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where she studied composition with Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod. She also studied with Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Canat de Chizy's early works were influenced by the music of Messiaen, and she often incorporated elements of his style into her compositions. However, she soon developed her own unique voice, characterized by a focus on timbre and texture, as well as a fascination with the natural world. One of Canat de Chizy's most notable works is her 1991 piece "Aquarius," which was commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture. The piece is scored for large orchestra and features a prominent role for the percussion section. It is inspired by the astrological sign of Aquarius and incorporates elements of water imagery throughout. Another notable work by Canat de Chizy is her 2003 piece "Le Temps scintille," which was commissioned by the Orchestre National de France. The piece is scored for orchestra and features a prominent role for the harp. It is inspired by the concept of time and incorporates elements of clockwork and ticking sounds throughout. Canat de Chizy has also composed a number of works for chamber ensembles, including her 1995 piece "String Quartet No. 2," which was commissioned by the Quatuor Rosamonde. The piece is characterized by its use of extended techniques, such as harmonics and glissandi, and its exploration of the timbral possibilities of the string quartet. In addition to her work as a composer, Canat de Chizy has also been active as a teacher and mentor. She has taught composition at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris and has served as a mentor to a number of young composers. Canat de Chizy has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Grand Prix de la Musique Symphonique from the Académie Charles Cros in 1995 and the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris in 2001. She was also made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2004. Overall, Edith Canat de Chizy is a highly respected composer who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Her work is characterized by its focus on timbre and texture, as well as its exploration of the natural world and the concept of time.
