The Suk Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences around the world for over 30 years. The quartet was founded in 1992 in Prague, Czech Republic, and is named after the famous Czech violinist and composer, Josef Suk. The founding members of the Suk Quartet were four young musicians who had already established themselves as accomplished soloists and chamber musicians. The first violinist was Josef Špaček, who later went on to become the concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. The second violinist was Václav Remes, the violist was Karel Krafka, and the cellist was Vladimir Leixner. From the very beginning, the Suk Quartet was committed to performing the works of Czech composers, such as Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, and Leoš Janáček. However, they also explored the works of other composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. One of the highlights of the Suk Quartet's early career was their victory at the prestigious Prague Spring International Music Competition in 1996. This win helped to establish the quartet as one of the leading chamber ensembles in the world. Over the years, the Suk Quartet has undergone some changes in its membership. In 2002, Karel Krafka retired from the quartet, and Radim Sedmidubský took over as the violist. In 2017, Vladimir Leixner also retired, and Ales Kasprik became the new cellist. Despite these changes, the Suk Quartet has continued to maintain its high standards of musicianship and artistry. They have performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of the Suk Quartet's most notable performances was their rendition of Dvořák's String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96, also known as the "American" quartet. This performance was recorded live at the Rudolfinum in Prague and was released on CD in 2008. The recording received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Chamber Music Performance category. In addition to their performances, the Suk Quartet has also been active in recording. They have released over 20 albums, including recordings of the complete string quartets of Dvořák, Smetana, and Janáček. The Suk Quartet has received numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In addition to their victory at the Prague Spring International Music Competition, they have also won the Borciani Competition in Italy and the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan. The quartet has also been recognized for their contributions to Czech culture. In 2012, they were awarded the Medal of Merit by the Czech Republic for their promotion of Czech music and culture around the world. Today, the Suk Quartet continues to perform and record, delighting audiences with their exquisite musicianship and passion for chamber music. They remain one of the most respected and beloved classical music ensembles in the world.
