The Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1980 by composer Edwin London. The ensemble is based in Cleveland, Ohio, and is known for its innovative programming and commitment to contemporary music. Edwin London, who served as the ensemble's music director until 2006, founded the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra with the goal of creating a platform for contemporary composers to showcase their work. The ensemble's first concert was held in 1980 at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and featured works by composers such as Elliott Carter, George Crumb, and Donald Erb. Over the years, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra has become known for its commitment to new music, and has commissioned and premiered works by a wide range of composers, including John Adams, Joan Tower, and Jennifer Higdon. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of prominent soloists, including pianist Ursula Oppens and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles. The ensemble was one of only a handful of American orchestras invited to perform at the festival, and its performance was widely praised for its innovative programming and virtuosic playing. In addition to its performances, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its contributions to contemporary music. The ensemble has received numerous awards and grants, including the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming and the National Endowment for the Arts' American Masterpieces grant. The Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra has also been committed to education and outreach, and has worked with a number of schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. The ensemble has offered masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and has also performed in a number of non-traditional venues, such as prisons and homeless shelters. Today, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra continues to be a leading voice in contemporary classical music. The ensemble is currently led by music director Stephen Smith, and continues to commission and premiere new works by emerging and established composers. With its commitment to innovation and excellence, the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra is sure to remain a vital force in the classical music world for years to come.
