Leone Buyse is a renowned flutist and educator in the world of classical music. Born in 1951 in Memphis, Tennessee, Buyse grew up in a musical family and began playing the flute at the age of nine. She went on to study at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. After completing her studies, Buyse began her professional career as a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. She then went on to become the principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a position she held for 22 years. During her time with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Buyse also served as a faculty member at the New England Conservatory of Music. In addition to her orchestral work, Buyse has also established herself as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout the United States and Europe, including the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Buyse has also been recognized for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 1980, she was awarded the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, which led to her debut recital at Carnegie Hall. She has also been a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grant and the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities Fellowship. In addition to her performing career, Buyse is also a highly respected educator. She has served on the faculties of the New England Conservatory of Music, the Boston University School of Music, and the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance. She is currently a professor of flute at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas. Buyse is also a prolific author and has written several books on flute technique and pedagogy. Her publications include “The Flutist’s Primer: A Guide to Proper Playing Techniques,” “The Flute Scale Book,” and “The Orchestral Flute Practice Book.” Throughout her career, Buyse has remained dedicated to promoting the art of classical music and inspiring the next generation of musicians. Her contributions to the world of classical music have earned her a place among the most respected and influential flutists of her generation.
