Elektra Women's Choir is a Canadian classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their stunning performances for over 30 years. Founded in 1987 by Morna Edmundson, the choir has become one of the most respected and renowned women's choirs in the world. The birth of Elektra Women's Choir can be traced back to Morna Edmundson's desire to create a choir that would showcase the unique sound and power of women's voices. Edmundson, who had previously sung with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, was inspired by the work of other women's choirs such as the Toronto Children's Chorus and the Vancouver Bach Choir's Women's Chorus. She believed that there was a need for a professional women's choir in Vancouver that could perform a wide range of repertoire, from classical to contemporary. With this vision in mind, Edmundson began recruiting singers for the choir. She was looking for women who had strong vocal abilities, a passion for music, and a commitment to excellence. The first rehearsal of Elektra Women's Choir took place in September 1987, with 16 singers in attendance. From the very beginning, Elektra Women's Choir was committed to excellence. Under Edmundson's leadership, the choir worked tirelessly to perfect their sound and technique. They rehearsed for hours each week, focusing on everything from breath control to diction. The hard work paid off, and the choir quickly gained a reputation for their exceptional performances. One of the highlights of Elektra Women's Choir's early years was their performance at the 1990 World Symposium on Choral Music in Helsinki, Finland. This was a major international event that brought together choirs from all over the world. Elektra Women's Choir was one of only two Canadian choirs invited to perform at the symposium, and they received rave reviews for their performance. Over the years, Elektra Women's Choir has continued to perform at major international events and festivals. They have performed at the International Choral Kathaumixw in Powell River, British Columbia, the Festival 500 in St. John's, Newfoundland, and the World Symposium on Choral Music in Sydney, Australia, among others. In addition to their international performances, Elektra Women's Choir has also performed at some of the most prestigious venues in Canada. They have performed at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts in Vancouver, and the Winspear Centre in Edmonton, among others. One of the most significant moments in Elektra Women's Choir's history came in 2000 when they released their first CD, "Pure Elektra." This was a major milestone for the choir, as it allowed them to reach a wider audience and showcase their talent to the world. The CD received critical acclaim and was nominated for a Juno Award, which is Canada's most prestigious music award. Since then, Elektra Women's Choir has released several more CDs, including "Child of Grace" in 2004, "Chez Nous: Christmas with Elektra" in 2007, and "Elektra Women's Choir: 25" in 2012. All of these CDs have been well-received by critics and audiences alike. In addition to their recordings, Elektra Women's Choir has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. They have won several awards at the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs, including first place in the women's choir category in 1992 and 1996.
