Born on December 28, 1964, in Strasbourg, France, Gallois grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a cellist, and his mother was a pianist. Gallois started playing the piano at the age of six, but he soon switched to the bassoon, which became his primary instrument. Gallois received his musical education at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he studied with Maurice Allard. He graduated with a first prize in bassoon in 1986 and went on to win several prestigious awards, including the International Competition for Young Soloists in Douai, France, in 1987, and the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, Germany, in 1988. Gallois began his professional career as a bassoonist with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, a Paris-based contemporary music ensemble founded by Pierre Boulez. He played with the ensemble for ten years, during which time he performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and collaborated with many of the leading composers of the day. In 1996, Gallois left the Ensemble Intercontemporain to pursue a solo career. Since then, he has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Pierre Boulez, Simon Rattle, and Daniel Barenboim. Gallois is particularly known for his interpretations of contemporary music. He has premiered many works by leading composers, including Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, and Kaija Saariaho. He has also recorded extensively, with over 50 albums to his name. His recordings have won numerous awards, including the Diapason d'Or, the Choc de la Musique, and the Gramophone Award. In addition to his work as a bassoonist, Gallois is also a conductor. He has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He is particularly known for his interpretations of contemporary music, and he has conducted many premieres of new works. Gallois is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, and the Tokyo University of the Arts. He is currently a professor of bassoon at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln in Germany. Throughout his career, Gallois has received many awards and honors. In 2003, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of his contribution to the arts. In 2011, he was awarded the Prix de la Fondation Simone et Cino Del Duca, one of the most prestigious awards in France, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the arts.
