He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Josef's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Josef began his musical training at the age of six, studying the piano with his mother. He showed great promise and was soon performing in public. At the age of ten, he began studying the violin with his father. Josef quickly became proficient on the instrument and began performing in orchestras and chamber groups. In 1943, Josef was drafted into the German army and was sent to fight on the Eastern Front. He was captured by the Soviet army in 1944 and spent the remainder of the war in a prisoner of war camp. While in captivity, Josef continued to play the violin and piano, often performing for his fellow prisoners. After the war, Josef returned to Vienna and resumed his musical studies. He studied with some of the most renowned musicians of the time, including Carl Flesch and Wilhelm Kempff.
