His father was a trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist, which exposed him to music at an early age. Scatterday's passion for music began when he was a child, and he started playing the drums at the age of six. He later learned to play the piano and trumpet, which broadened his musical knowledge. Scatterday attended the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion performance in 1978. He later earned a Master of Music degree in percussion performance from the same institution in 1980. Scatterday's talent as a percussionist earned him recognition, and he was invited to perform at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In addition to his work as a percussionist, Scatterday also developed an interest in conducting. He studied conducting with David Effron and Gustav Meier at the Eastman School of Music and later with Leonard Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Center. Scatterday's talent as a conductor was evident, and he was appointed as the conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble in 1992. As the conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, Scatterday led the group to new heights of excellence. He expanded the ensemble's repertoire, commissioning new works and performing pieces that had never been played by a wind ensemble before. Scatterday's innovative approach to conducting earned him recognition, and he was awarded the prestigious Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguished Service to Music Medal in 2001. He has conducted the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic, among others.
