He was born on November 14, 1948, in Hyde Park, New York, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a singer. Tyzik started playing the trumpet at the age of nine and was soon performing in local bands and orchestras. Tyzik attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he studied trumpet and composition.
