He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a conductor and his mother a pianist. Janssen started playing the piano at the age of five and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Janssen received his formal education at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where he studied under the tutelage of Jan Wijn. He later continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Lev Naumov and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Naum Grubert. Janssen made his debut as a soloist with the Amsterdam Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 14, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major. He went on to perform with many other orchestras, including the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Janssen has won numerous awards throughout his career, including the prestigious Dutch Music Prize in 1993, which is the highest honor for a classical musician in the Netherlands. He has also been awarded the Edison Classical Music Award, the VSCD Classical Music Prize, and the Prix d'Excellence. Janssen is known for his unique approach to classical music, often performing works that are rarely heard in concert halls. He has recorded the complete piano works of Bach, Mozart, and Schumann, as well as the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven.
