Yevgeny Kutik is a Russian-American violinist who has gained international recognition for his virtuosic performances and passionate interpretations of classical music. Born in Minsk, Belarus in 1985, Kutik began playing the violin at the age of five, under the guidance of his mother, a professional pianist. In 1990, Kutik and his family immigrated to the United States, settling in the Boston area. He continued his violin studies with Roman Totenberg, a renowned Polish-American violinist, and later with Donald Weilerstein at the New England Conservatory of Music. Kutik also attended the Boston Latin School, where he was a member of the school's orchestra and won numerous awards for his musical talent. Kutik's career as a professional musician began to take off in the early 2000s, when he won several prestigious competitions, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra Young Artists Competition and the Tanglewood Music Center Jules C. Reiner Violin Prize. He also performed as a soloist with the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, among others. In 2006, Kutik made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City, performing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the Russian Chamber Orchestra. The performance was met with critical acclaim, and Kutik was praised for his "fiery and passionate" playing. This performance helped to establish Kutik as one of the most promising young violinists of his generation. Since then, Kutik has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared at major music festivals, such as the Ravinia Festival, the Tanglewood Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival. Kutik is known for his deep commitment to contemporary music, and has premiered works by many of today's leading composers, including Michael Gandolfi, Nico Muhly, and Timo Andres. He has also recorded several albums of contemporary music, including "Words Fail" (2016), which features works by Jewish composers who were affected by the Holocaust. In addition to his performing career, Kutik is also a dedicated educator and advocate for music education. He has taught masterclasses at universities and conservatories around the world, and has worked with organizations such as the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. Kutik has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Salon de Virtuosi Career Grant, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Award, and the Avery Fisher Career Grant. He was also named a 2019 Sphinx Medal of Excellence recipient, in recognition of his contributions to the field of classical music. Despite his many accomplishments, Kutik remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He has said that his goal as a musician is to "create a connection with the audience, to make them feel something, to make them forget about their problems for a little while." With his passionate playing and deep commitment to music, Yevgeny Kutik is sure to continue to inspire audiences around the world for many years to come.
