Born on June 28, 1950, in Naugatuck, Connecticut, Oliveira grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Oliveira started playing the violin at the age of eight and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Oliveira's talent was recognized by many, and he was soon performing in public. At the age of thirteen, he made his debut with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. He studied under the renowned violinist Ivan Galamian and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1971. In 1978, Oliveira won the Gold Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which was a significant achievement for him.
