Her parents were both musicians, and they encouraged her to pursue music from a young age. Engert began playing the piano at the age of four and showed exceptional talent from the start. Engert's parents recognized her talent and enrolled her in the Berlin Conservatory of Music when she was just six years old. She studied under some of the most prominent music teachers in Germany, including Walter Gieseking and Edwin Fischer. Engert's dedication and hard work paid off, and she graduated from the conservatory with top honors. After completing her studies, Engert began performing in concerts across Europe. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented pianist and was invited to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in the world. Engert's performances were characterized by her technical skill, musicality, and emotional depth. One of Engert's most significant performances was at the Salzburg Festival in 1958. She performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and her performance was met with critical acclaim.
