The Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra, also known as the SWR Symphony Orchestra, is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Stuttgart, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1946 by the German radio broadcaster Südwestfunk, which later merged with Süddeutscher Rundfunk to form the SWR broadcasting corporation. The SWR Symphony Orchestra has a rich history of musical excellence and has been led by many distinguished conductors over the years. Some of the orchestra's most notable music directors include Hans Rosbaud, Ernest Bour, Michael Gielen, and Sir Roger Norrington. The current principal conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra is Teodor Currentzis, who has been with the orchestra since 2018. The SWR Symphony Orchestra is made up of over 100 musicians, including some of the most talented instrumentalists in Germany and beyond. The orchestra's members come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of musical experiences to their performances. Over the years, the SWR Symphony Orchestra has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Daniel Barenboim. One of the highlights of the SWR Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1953 Salzburg Festival, where the orchestra played under the baton of Hans Rosbaud. In 2007, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 7 under the direction of Michael Gielen. The orchestra has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards for its recordings with conductor Sir Roger Norrington.
