Else Paaske was a Danish classical music artist who was born on August 22, 1914, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was the daughter of a Danish father and a Norwegian mother. Paaske grew up in a musical family, and her parents encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began playing the piano at a young age and showed great talent and passion for the instrument. Paaske studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where she received her diploma in piano performance in 1937. She continued her studies in Paris with the renowned pianist Alfred Cortot, who had a significant influence on her playing style. Paaske also studied with other notable pianists, including Edwin Fischer and Walter Gieseking. Paaske made her debut as a soloist in 1938, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and became a sought-after performer in Denmark and abroad. In 1940, she won the prestigious Carl Nielsen Prize, which is awarded to outstanding Danish musicians. During World War II, Paaske continued to perform despite the difficult circumstances. She gave concerts for the Danish resistance movement and played for Danish prisoners of war in Germany. In 1943, she married the Danish composer Knudåge Riisager, with whom she had two children. Paaske's career continued to flourish after the war. She performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, playing with major orchestras and conductors. She was particularly known for her interpretations of the works of Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert. In 1952, Paaske made her debut at the Salzburg Festival, where she performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Herbert von Karajan. The performance was a great success and helped to establish Paaske as one of the leading pianists of her time. Paaske also had a successful recording career, making numerous recordings for the Danish label Danacord and other labels. Her recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas and Mozart's piano concertos are particularly highly regarded. In addition to her performing career, Paaske was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where she was a professor of piano from 1963 to 1981. Many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists. Paaske continued to perform and teach well into her later years. She gave her last concert in 1994, at the age of 80. She passed away on December 10, 1996, in Copenhagen, Denmark, at the age of 82. Throughout her career, Else Paaske was widely recognized for her exceptional talent and musicianship. She received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors, and the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, one of the most prestigious music awards in Denmark. She was also made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1959 and a Commander of the Order in 1984. Paaske's legacy as a pianist and teacher continues to be felt today. Her recordings and performances are still admired for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity, and her influence on generations of pianists is immeasurable. She remains one of Denmark's most beloved and respected classical musicians.
