Born on August 25, 1947, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Shostac grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Shostac started playing the flute at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Shostac's early musical education was under the tutelage of William Kincaid, the principal flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Kincaid was a legendary flutist who had a significant influence on Shostac's playing style.
