She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father, Juho Rautawaara, was a composer and conductor, and her mother, Aino Rautawaara, was a pianist. Aulikki showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Aulikki Rautawaara received her formal music education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she studied piano, composition, and conducting. She graduated from the academy in 1930 and began her career as a pianist and conductor. She quickly gained a reputation as a talented musician and was invited to perform in concerts and festivals throughout Finland. One of the highlights of Aulikki Rautawaara's career was her performance of Jean Sibelius's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in 1935. The performance was a great success, and Rautawaara received critical acclaim for her interpretation of the piece. She went on to perform the concerto with other orchestras in Finland and abroad. In addition to her work as a pianist, Aulikki Rautawaara was also a conductor. She was one of the first female conductors in Finland and was known for her dynamic and expressive conducting style. She conducted many orchestras in Finland, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. Aulikki Rautawaara was also a composer and wrote music for piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. Her compositions were influenced by Finnish folk music and often featured lyrical melodies and rich harmonies. Some of her most famous compositions include the piano piece "Kesäillan valssi" (Summer Evening Waltz) and the orchestral work "Kevät" (Spring). Throughout her career, Aulikki Rautawaara received many awards and honors for her contributions to Finnish music. In 1956, she was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a Finnish citizen. She was also awarded the Finnish State Prize for Music in 1961 and the Sibelius Medal in 1976. Aulikki Rautawaara continued to perform and compose music well into her later years.
