The Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy, also known as the Nancy Symphony Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in Nancy, France. The orchestra was founded in 1967 by a group of musicians who wanted to create a professional orchestra in the Lorraine region of France. The founding members of the orchestra included musicians from the Conservatoire National de Région de Nancy, as well as other professional musicians from the region. The orchestra's first conductor was Jean Fournet, a renowned French conductor who had previously conducted the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France. Over the years, the orchestra has had several conductors, including Jacques Mercier, who served as the orchestra's music director from 1989 to 1998. During his tenure, the orchestra gained international recognition and performed in major concert halls throughout Europe and Asia. The orchestra's current music director is Rani Calderon, an Israeli conductor who has worked with several major orchestras around the world. Calderon has been the orchestra's music director since 2011 and has led the orchestra in several critically acclaimed performances. The Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy is known for its diverse repertoire, which includes classical works, contemporary music, and operas. The orchestra has collaborated with several renowned soloists, including pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, violinist Renaud Capuçon, and cellist Gautier Capuçon. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was its 50th anniversary concert in 2017, which was conducted by Rani Calderon and featured works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Ravel. The concert was held at the Opéra national de Lorraine in Nancy and was attended by a sold-out audience. The orchestra has also received several awards and accolades throughout its history. In 2010, the orchestra was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie Stanislas, a prestigious award given to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the arts in the Lorraine region. In addition to its regular concert series, the Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy is also involved in educational outreach programs. The orchestra regularly performs for school groups and offers workshops and masterclasses for young musicians. Overall, the Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy has established itself as one of the leading classical music ensembles in France. With its diverse repertoire, talented musicians, and commitment to education and outreach, the orchestra continues to inspire audiences and promote the arts in the Lorraine region and beyond.
