Born in Shanghai, China in 1945, Dichter grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they instilled in him a love of music from a young age. Dichter began playing the piano at the age of four, and by the time he was six, he was already performing in public. His family moved to Los Angeles when he was nine, and he continued his musical studies there. He studied with Aube Tzerko, a renowned piano teacher who had also taught Van Cliburn and Horowitz. Dichter's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly gained recognition as a prodigy. He won the prestigious Leventritt Competition in 1966, which launched his career as a professional pianist. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Dichter's most memorable performances was his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1968. He played Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the New York Philharmonic, and the performance was met with critical acclaim. The New York Times called it "a performance of extraordinary power and brilliance." Dichter's repertoire is vast and includes works by many of the great composers, including Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff.
