Oxalys is a Belgian classical music ensemble that was founded in 1993. The ensemble is known for its innovative and dynamic approach to classical music, and has gained a reputation as one of the most exciting and versatile ensembles in Europe. The founding members of Oxalys were pianist Jan Michiels, violinist Shirly Laub, cellist Martijn Vink, and clarinetist Ronald Van Spaendonck. The ensemble was formed with the goal of exploring the rich and diverse repertoire of chamber music, and to bring new and exciting interpretations to audiences around the world. Over the years, Oxalys has expanded its membership to include a number of other talented musicians, including violist Tony Nys, flutist Toon Fret, and oboist Piet Van Bockstal. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of renowned soloists and conductors, including pianist Maria João Pires, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, and conductor Reinbert de Leeuw. One of the highlights of Oxalys' career was their performance at the 2002 Salzburg Festival, where they performed a program of works by Mozart, Schubert, and Brahms. The ensemble received critical acclaim for their performance, with many critics praising their technical skill and musical sensitivity. In addition to their performances at major festivals and concert halls around the world, Oxalys has also released a number of highly acclaimed recordings. Their 2005 recording of Schubert's "Trout" Quintet was particularly well-received, and was named one of the best classical recordings of the year by several major publications. Oxalys has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout their career. In 2003, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Fuga Trophy by the Belgian Composers' Association, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the performance and promotion of contemporary Belgian music.
