Finlandia Sinfonietta is a classical music orchestra based in Lahti, Finland. The orchestra was founded in 1997 by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and the Sibelius Academy, with the aim of creating a new, dynamic ensemble that would bring fresh perspectives to the classical music scene in Finland. The orchestra's name is derived from the famous composition "Finlandia" by Jean Sibelius, one of Finland's most celebrated composers. The name reflects the orchestra's commitment to promoting Finnish music and culture, while also embracing a diverse range of classical repertoire from around the world. From its inception, Finlandia Sinfonietta has been known for its innovative programming and high artistic standards. The orchestra has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including Maxim Vengerov, Hilary Hahn, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, among others. One of the highlights of the orchestra's early years was its performance at the 1999 Helsinki Festival, where it premiered a new work by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. The piece, titled "Orion," was a major success and helped to establish Finlandia Sinfonietta as a leading force in contemporary classical music. Over the years, the orchestra has continued to build its reputation through a series of acclaimed recordings and performances. In 2003, it released a recording of Sibelius's "Kullervo Symphony," which was praised for its powerful interpretation and technical precision. In 2008, Finlandia Sinfonietta embarked on a major tour of China, performing in some of the country's most prestigious concert halls. The tour was a major success, and helped to raise the orchestra's profile on the international stage. In recent years, Finlandia Sinfonietta has continued to push the boundaries of classical music, collaborating with artists from a wide range of genres and backgrounds. In 2016, the orchestra teamed up with Finnish hip-hop artist Paleface for a series of concerts that blended classical and contemporary music in innovative ways. Throughout its history, Finlandia Sinfonietta has received numerous awards and accolades for its contributions to the classical music world. In 2005, the orchestra was awarded the Finnish State Prize for Music, one of the country's highest honors for musicians. In 2017, Finlandia Sinfonietta celebrated its 20th anniversary with a series of special concerts and events.
