Born in 1962 in Lancashire, England, Cutt showed an early interest in music and began playing the cornet at the age of six. He quickly progressed and by the age of 12, he had joined the local brass band, where he played the solo cornet. Cutt's talent was recognized early on, and he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. There, he studied under the tutelage of some of the most respected conductors and musicians in the country, including James Watson and Howard Snell. After completing his studies, Cutt began his professional career as a conductor, working with a number of orchestras and ensembles across the UK. He quickly gained a reputation for his skill and precision, and was soon in demand as a guest conductor for some of the country's most prestigious orchestras. In 1991, Cutt was appointed as the Musical Director of the Fodens Richardson Band, one of the UK's most successful brass bands. Under his leadership, the band went on to win a number of major competitions, including the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain and the European Brass Band Championships. Cutt's success with the Fodens Richardson Band led to further opportunities, and he was soon conducting some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. One of Cutt's most notable performances came in 2002, when he conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2.
