He was the son of a bandmaster, and his father's influence played a significant role in his musical development. Hall began his musical training at a young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already an accomplished musician. In 1878, Hall moved to Boston to study music at the New England Conservatory of Music. While there, he studied under some of the most prominent musicians of the time, including George W. Chadwick and John Knowles Paine. After completing his studies, Hall began his career as a bandmaster, leading several military bands in the Boston area. In 1880, Hall moved to New York City, where he became the bandmaster of the 22nd Regiment Band. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the best bandmasters in the country, and his band became one of the most popular in New York City. Hall's success as a bandmaster led to him being appointed as the director of music for the New York City Public Schools in 1891. Throughout his career, Hall composed a wide variety of music, including marches, waltzes, and other pieces for band. One of his most famous compositions is the march "The New Colonial," which was written in 1892. The march was an instant success and became one of the most popular marches of the time. Another one of Hall's famous compositions is the waltz "The Wedding of the Winds," which was written in 1897. The waltz was also a huge success and became one of the most popular waltzes of the time. In addition to his work as a composer and bandmaster, Hall was also a prolific arranger. He arranged many popular songs of the time for band, including "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful." His arrangements were known for their skillful use of instrumentation and their ability to capture the spirit of the original songs.
