Marc Mauillon is a French baritone and countertenor who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on December 22, 1974, in the city of Lyon, France, Mauillon grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a music teacher, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Mauillon showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. As he grew older, Mauillon's musical interests expanded, and he began to explore singing. He joined the choir at his school and quickly discovered that he had a natural talent for singing. He began taking voice lessons and soon became a soloist in the choir. Mauillon's voice was unique in that it had a high range, which allowed him to sing both as a baritone and a countertenor. After completing his secondary education, Mauillon enrolled at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon, where he studied voice under the tutelage of Christiane Eda-Pierre. He also studied musicology at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, where he earned a degree in musicology. Mauillon's career as a professional musician began in 1999 when he joined the ensemble Les Arts Florissants, led by William Christie. With Les Arts Florissants, Mauillon performed in numerous concerts and operas, including productions of Handel's "Giulio Cesare" and Rameau's "Les Indes Galantes." He also performed with other leading ensembles, such as Le Concert Spirituel and Les Talens Lyriques. In addition to his work with ensembles, Mauillon has also established himself as a solo artist. He has performed in recitals and concerts throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. Some of his most notable performances include his debut at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, where he performed in a production of Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo," and his performance in a production of Rameau's "Hippolyte et Aricie" at the Opéra National de Paris. Mauillon's repertoire is diverse, and he has performed works by a wide range of composers, including Monteverdi, Handel, Bach, Mozart, and Schubert. He is particularly known for his interpretations of French baroque music, and he has recorded several albums of French baroque music, including "Leçons de Ténèbres" by François Couperin and "Cantates Françaises" by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Mauillon's talent and dedication to his craft have earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2002, he was awarded the Prix Jeune Soliste by the Fondation Cziffra, which recognizes young musicians who show exceptional promise. In 2006, he was awarded the Prix Liliane Bettencourt pour le chant choral, which recognizes outstanding contributions to choral music. In addition to his work as a performer, Mauillon is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught voice at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon and the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris. He is also a frequent guest lecturer and masterclass teacher at universities and conservatories throughout Europe and North America. In conclusion, Marc Mauillon is a talented and accomplished musician who has made significant contributions to the world of classical music. His unique voice and dedication to his craft have earned him a reputation as one of the leading baritones and countertenors of his generation. With his continued commitment to his art and his passion for teaching, Mauillon is sure to inspire and influence generations of musicians to come.
