He was the youngest of three children born to his parents, who were both musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Kanta showed a keen interest in music, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. Kanta began his musical education at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons from his mother. He quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument, and by the age of ten, he was already performing in public. In 1950, Kanta's family moved to Bratislava, where he continued his musical education at the Bratislava Conservatory. He studied under some of the most renowned teachers in the country, including Jozef Podprocky and Jozef Grešák. In 1958, Kanta graduated from the conservatory with honors, and he immediately began his professional career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented young pianists in the country, and he was soon invited to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Kanta's breakthrough performance came in 1962, when he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Prague. This was a major achievement for Kanta, as the competition was one of the most prestigious in the world, and it attracted some of the most talented young pianists from around the globe. Kanta's performance was praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and he was hailed as a rising star in the world of classical music. Following his victory in Prague, Kanta's career took off. He was invited to perform at some of the most prestigious venues in Europe, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Musikverein in Vienna. He also made several recordings for major record labels, including Deutsche Grammophon and Philips. Kanta's repertoire was wide-ranging, and he was equally at home performing the works of classical masters like Mozart and Beethoven, as well as more contemporary composers like Bartok and Prokofiev. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Slovakian composers, and he was a passionate advocate for the music of his homeland. Throughout his career, Kanta received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1972, he was awarded the title of Merited Artist of the Slovak Republic, and in 1989, he was awarded the Order of the White Double Cross, one of the highest honors in Slovakia. He was also a member of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Arts, and he received honorary doctorates from several universities. Despite his success, Kanta remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and record well into his seventies, and he was a beloved figure in the world of classical music. He passed away on December 31, 2018, at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional talent and dedication to his art.More....
