Rachel Podger is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a violinist and conductor. Born in 1968 in England, Podger grew up in a musical family and began playing the violin at a young age. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and later at the Juilliard School in New York. Podger's career as a professional musician began in the early 1990s, when she joined the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. She quickly established herself as a leading performer of Baroque music, and in 1997 she founded her own ensemble, Brecon Baroque. With this group, she has recorded several critically acclaimed albums, including "Guardian Angel" and "La Cetra." Over the years, Podger has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the Academy of Ancient Music, the English Concert, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. She has also collaborated with a number of other musicians, including cellist Steven Isserlis and pianist Gary Cooper. One of the highlights of Podger's career came in 2018, when she was awarded the prestigious Royal Academy of Music Bach Prize. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to the performance and study of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and Podger was the first woman to receive it.
