Born in London, England in 1951, Isherwood grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a professional cellist, and his mother was a pianist and singer. Isherwood began singing in choirs and playing the piano at a young age, and his talent was quickly recognized. Isherwood studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he trained as a bass-baritone. He also studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland, where he learned to sing early music and baroque repertoire.
