The Prague National Theatre Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over a century. The choir was founded in 1883 as part of the newly established National Theatre in Prague, Czech Republic. Since then, it has become one of the most respected and sought-after choirs in the world. The Prague National Theatre Chorus was established by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana, who was also the first director of the National Theatre. Smetana recognized the importance of having a professional choir to perform in the theatre's productions, and he handpicked the best singers from across the country to form the choir. The choir's first performance was in the opera Libuše, which was composed by Smetana himself. Over the years, the Prague National Theatre Chorus has grown in size and reputation. Today, it consists of around 150 singers, all of whom are highly trained professionals. The choir performs a wide range of classical music, including operas, oratorios, and choral works. The choir's repertoire includes works by Czech composers such as Smetana, Antonín Dvořák, and Leoš Janáček, as well as works by international composers such as Mozart, Verdi, and Wagner. One of the highlights of the Prague National Theatre Chorus's history was its performance of Smetana's opera The Bartered Bride at the Vienna State Opera in 1913. This was the choir's first international performance, and it was a huge success. The performance was attended by many prominent figures in the world of classical music, including Gustav Mahler, who was the director of the Vienna State Opera at the time. In the years that followed, the Prague National Theatre Chorus continued to perform at major venues around the world, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The choir's performances were always highly acclaimed, and it quickly became known as one of the best choirs in the world. In addition to its performances, the Prague National Theatre Chorus has also received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1955, the choir was awarded the title of "National Ensemble" by the Czechoslovak government, in recognition of its contribution to Czech culture. In 1992, the choir was awarded the prestigious Thalia Prize, which is the highest award for artistic achievement in the Czech Republic. Today, the Prague National Theatre Chorus continues to be a leading force in the world of classical music. The choir's performances are still highly sought-after, and it continues to receive critical acclaim for its exceptional performances. The choir's commitment to excellence and its dedication to preserving the rich tradition of Czech classical music have made it a beloved institution in the world of classical music.
