Jaroslav Krombholc was a renowned Czech conductor and composer who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on May 22, 1918, in Prague, Czechoslovakia, to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Krombholc showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Krombholc studied at the Prague Conservatory, where he received training in conducting, composition, and piano. He also studied with the famous Czech composer and conductor Václav Talich. Krombholc's talent as a conductor was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his skills. In 1945, Krombholc became the conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, a position he held until 1950. During his tenure, he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings, including works by Czech composers such as Antonín Dvořák and Bedřich Smetana. He also conducted the premiere of Bohuslav Martinů's Symphony No. 4. In 1950, Krombholc was appointed the principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. He held this position until 1968 and led the orchestra in many notable performances, including the premiere of Martinů's Symphony No. 5. Krombholc also conducted the orchestra in recordings of works by Czech composers, including Smetana's Má vlast and Dvořák's Symphony No. 9. Krombholc's international career began in the 1950s when he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Krombholc was known for his interpretations of the works of Czech composers, but he also conducted works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. In addition to his work as a conductor, Krombholc was also a composer. He wrote several works, including a symphony, a piano concerto, and a string quartet. His compositions were influenced by Czech folk music and were well-received by audiences and critics alike. Krombholc received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1955, he was awarded the State Prize for his contributions to Czech music. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor by the Soviet Union in 1960. In 1968, Krombholc was awarded the title of National Artist, the highest honor given to artists in Czechoslovakia. Krombholc's career was interrupted by the political turmoil in Czechoslovakia in 1968. He was dismissed from his position as the principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and was forced to leave the country. Krombholc settled in Switzerland, where he continued to conduct and compose. He conducted the Zurich Opera and the Basel Symphony Orchestra and wrote several works, including a ballet and an opera. Krombholc returned to Czechoslovakia in 1990 after the fall of communism. He was welcomed back as a hero and was appointed the honorary conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. He continued to conduct and compose until his death on February 2, 1983, in Prague.
