Born on August 15, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, Katz grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Katz started playing the cello at the age of seven and quickly showed exceptional talent. Katz received his early music education at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with the legendary cellist Leonard Rose. He later went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music. During his time at Juilliard, Katz was a student of the renowned cellist and pedagogue, Claus Adam. After completing his studies, Katz embarked on a successful career as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. He has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, such as Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, and Zubin Mehta. One of the highlights of Katz's career was his tenure as the cellist of the Cleveland Quartet. Katz was a member of the quartet for 26 years, during which time they won numerous awards and accolades, including the Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance in 1976. In addition to his performing career, Katz has also made significant contributions to music education. He has been a faculty member at the New England Conservatory of Music since 1976 and has taught at many other institutions, including the Eastman School of Music and the Peabody Institute.
