David Sanger is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music through his exceptional skills as a percussionist. Born on August 22, 1951, in New York City, Sanger grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, which exposed him to different genres of music from a young age. Sanger's interest in music began at the age of six when he started playing the piano. However, he soon discovered his love for percussion instruments and began playing the drums. He continued to hone his skills in percussion throughout his childhood and teenage years, and by the time he was ready to attend college, he had already established himself as a talented percussionist. Sanger attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied percussion under the guidance of renowned percussionist Saul Goodman. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1973 and went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School. During his time at Juilliard, Sanger studied under the tutelage of percussionist Morris Lang, who helped him refine his skills and develop his unique style. After completing his studies, Sanger began his professional career as a percussionist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional skills and was soon in high demand as a performer. In 1978, he joined the New York Philharmonic as a percussionist, a position he held for over 30 years. During his time with the New York Philharmonic, Sanger performed in countless concerts and recordings, including several world premieres of contemporary works. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and soloists in the world, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to his work with the New York Philharmonic, Sanger was also a member of the percussion ensemble Nexus, which he co-founded in 1971. Nexus was known for its innovative approach to percussion music, incorporating elements of world music and jazz into their performances. The ensemble toured extensively throughout the world and recorded numerous albums, earning critical acclaim for their unique sound. Sanger's exceptional skills as a percussionist have earned him numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1997, he was awarded the Percussive Arts Society's Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his contributions to the field of percussion. He has also been awarded the Avery Fisher Prize, the highest honor for classical musicians in the United States. Despite his many accomplishments, Sanger remains dedicated to his craft and continues to perform and teach. He has served as a faculty member at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he has mentored countless young percussionists. In addition to his work as a performer and teacher, Sanger is also a composer and arranger. He has written numerous works for percussion ensemble, including his acclaimed piece "Marimba Spiritual," which has been performed by ensembles around the world. David Sanger's contributions to the world of classical music have been significant, and his exceptional skills as a percussionist have earned him a place among the most respected musicians of his generation.
