Role:EnsembleQuatuor Schumann is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1989 in France. The ensemble is named after the famous German composer Robert Schumann, who is known for his contributions to the Romantic era of classical music. The founding members of Quatuor Schumann were violinists Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian and Régis Pasquier, violist Pierre Lenert, and cellist Eric-Maria Couturier. Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian was born in Marseille, France, in 1963. He began playing the violin at the age of five and went on to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. He has won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. Régis Pasquier was born in Marseille in 1949 and began playing the violin at the age of four. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors and has won several awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Victoires de la Musique. Pierre Lenert was born in Luxembourg in 1959 and began playing the viola at the age of six. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors and has won several awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. Eric-Maria Couturier was born in Paris in 1962 and began playing the cello at the age of six. He has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors and has won several awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. Quatuor Schumann has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The ensemble has performed at many of the world's leading concert halls, including the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Wigmore Hall in London, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. The ensemble has also performed at many of the world's leading music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Ravinia Festival. Quatuor Schumann has recorded extensively, with over 20 albums to their name. Their recordings have received critical acclaim and have won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. Some of their most notable recordings include their interpretations of the complete string quartets of Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms. One of the highlights of Quatuor Schumann's career was their performance at the 1994 Salzburg Festival. The ensemble performed the complete string quartets of Beethoven over the course of three concerts. The performances were widely praised by critics and established Quatuor Schumann as one of the leading string quartets of their generation. Another highlight of Quatuor Schumann's career was their performance at the 2003 Edinburgh Festival. The ensemble performed a program of works by Schumann, including his String Quartet No. 3 in A major and his Piano Quintet in E-flat major. The performance was widely praised by critics and established Quatuor Schumann as one of the leading interpreters of Schumann's music. Quatuor Schumann has also been recognized for their contributions to the world of classical music. In 2001, the ensemble was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of their contributions to the arts.
