Jonathan Bagg is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music through his exceptional skills as a violist, chamber musician, and educator. Born in 1963 in New York City, Bagg grew up in a family of musicians, which played a significant role in shaping his musical career. Bagg began his musical journey at a young age, learning to play the violin and piano. However, it was not until he was introduced to the viola that he found his true calling. Bagg's passion for the viola led him to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in Viola Performance at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He later went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School in New York City. After completing his studies, Bagg began his professional career as a violist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles across the United States. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills and was soon invited to perform at some of the most prestigious music festivals in the world, including the Marlboro Music Festival, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and the Seattle Chamber Music Festival. One of the highlights of Bagg's career was his appointment as the violist of the Muir String Quartet in 1990. The Muir String Quartet was one of the most highly regarded chamber ensembles of its time, and Bagg's addition to the group only added to its reputation. During his time with the Muir String Quartet, Bagg performed at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In addition to his work with the Muir String Quartet, Bagg has also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians in the world, including pianist Emanuel Ax, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Joshua Bell. He has also performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Bagg's exceptional skills as a musician have not gone unnoticed, and he has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1993, he was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. He has also been a recipient of the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Cleveland Quartet Award. In addition to his work as a performer, Bagg is also a highly respected educator. He has served on the faculty of several prestigious music schools, including the Eastman School of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He is currently the chair of the Department of Music at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.
