Colzani's love for music began at an early age, and he started singing in the church choir when he was just six years old. He received his formal training in music at the Conservatory of Bologna, where he studied under the guidance of the famous Italian baritone, Riccardo Stracciari. After completing his studies, Colzani made his debut in 1947 at the Teatro Comunale in Florence, where he played the role of Marcello in Puccini's La Bohème. His performance was well-received, and he soon became a sought-after baritone in Italy. In 1950, Colzani made his debut at the prestigious La Scala in Milan, where he played the role of Germont in Verdi's La Traviata. His performance was a huge success, and he was invited to perform at La Scala several times over the years. Colzani's career took off in the 1950s, and he became one of the most popular baritones of his time.
