Born on December 22, 1947, in Stockholm, Sweden, Widlund showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. His parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Widlund's musical education began at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he studied under the guidance of Professor Gunnar Hallhagen. He later continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York, where he studied with Adele Marcus and Sascha Gorodnitzki.
