Born in London, England in 1957, she began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. She went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where she was awarded the prestigious Tagore Gold Medal for outstanding achievement. Throughout her career, Ward Clarke has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with many distinguished musicians, such as pianist Stephen Kovacevich and violinist Maxim Vengerov. One of the highlights of Ward Clarke's career was her performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London. The performance was widely praised by critics, who noted her "rich, warm tone" and "sensitive interpretation" of the piece. She has also performed at many other prestigious venues, including the Royal Albert Hall, the Wigmore Hall, and the Berlin Philharmonic. In addition to her performing career, Ward Clarke is also a highly respected music educator. She has taught at the Royal College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Yehudi Menuhin School, among others. She is known for her innovative teaching methods, which focus on developing the whole musician, rather than just technical proficiency on the instrument. She was also made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of her services to music education.
